Blake's Grave

I recently moved to London. One weekend I took to wandering around Shoreditch and Central East London.

I happened upon an old graveyard that was still intact. A rarity in London as most have been ripped up and turned into parks.

While enjoying its cool silence, away from the hussel of busy London streets, I discovered that Blake was interned there. Interestingly, his grave had been lost for some 50 odd years since the end of the WWII and through the slueth work of some locals they relocated it and re-errected the gravestone.

Interestingly, people leave coins there. I assume its because the man died a pauper for his art and visions.

There were other famous authors buried there also. William Dafoe, "Robin Carusoe" (very close to Blake's grave), John Bunyin "Pilgrim's Progress".

When I was living with a frined in Wales I took a trip down to London, and one of the musts on my to do list was to visit Blake's grave. Many of the people I stopped for directions had no clue what I was talking about when I asked where Bunhill Fields was or William Blake's grave, surprisingly enough. Bunhill Fields (from "Bone Hill") is a Dissenter's cemetary. It is unconsecrated ground. The grave, itself, is rather plain and nearby Defoe and Particularly Bunyan's monuments are fancy in comparison. However, the leafy canopy is beautiful, and many of the tombs in the shade of these trees are decorated naturally with moss. It was a sunny day when I was there, and it seems like the cemetary is a favorite picnic spot, so the tombs are not lonely and forgotten. Though it wasn't the easiest to find, my trip to Blake's cemetary was a worthwhile journey.

The precise location of his unmarked burial, which he shares with others buried at the same time, is unknown. The monument is just a rough indication. It's nice to have some kind of marker, though.
